Sunday night saw the 69th annual Golden Globes Awards being hosted in Hollywood and as always the red carpet was inundated with glamour and style. There is nothing the fashion world enjoys more than dissecting, analysing and criticising awards season style and there has since been far more focus on who wore what, as opposed to the winners of the night.
Several trends emerged from the carpet; headbands were favoured by actresses such as Michelle Williams and Charlize Theron; while fishtail dresses and nude pastel gowns were chosen by others.
Below are some of the sartorial hits………and misses.
My favourite ensemble of the evening was worn by Latino beauty Salma Hayek. Her custom made Gucci dress was inspired by the art deco sequin flapper dresses that dominated their Spring Summer 2012 catwalk.
As mentioned, there was an influx of pastel tones. Heidi Klum wore a simple blush Calvin Klein dress, but added a Lorraine Schwartz neck piece for extra edge.
Amongst the other starlets that chose the demure nude shade were Charlize Theron in Christian Dior Couture and Kate Beckinsale in Roberto Cavalli. Nicole Richie also dazzled in Julien McDonald, accessorized of course with a House of Harlow clutch.
The fishtail gown made quite a splash on the night. Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara and “The Body” Elle McPherson showed off their enviable curves in figure hugging Vera Wang and Zac Posen respectively.
Other red carpet winners for me were quirky actress Emma Stone in a plunging purple Lanvin gown clinched with an eagle belt, Jessica Alba showing off her svelte post-baby figure in beaded Gucci and TV presenter Maria Menounous brightening things up in sunshine yellow.
There is always bound to be those who fall short of the mark, be it in over the top designs, ill fitting gowns or just plain wrong.
While the verdict has been unanimously in favour of Angelina Jolie’s Atelier Versace gown, for me the actress looks far too skeletal and her tattoo’s took away from what could have been a beautiful dress.
Madonna chose this unusual Reem Acra number, a daring choice that did not pay off. The intricate layering of the dress did nothing for the songstress, combined with the sequined bodice, fingerless gloves and a garish crucifix pendant, the whole outfit was reminiscent of her 1980’s wardrobe.
One of Hollywood’s leading young ladies was let down by her Dior gown. Mila Kunis is often labelled one of the hottest women in the world and can easily pull off any outfit. But in a bland colour and bland design, it was unlike her usual red carpet statements. Julianna Margulies also failed to tick the box in this fitted Naeem Khan dress and matronly hair do.
