Katy Perry promises to love you unconditionally, Lady Gaga tells you to do what you want with her body and Justin Timberlake wants to drink you away. Yes, it’s that time of year again. The style stakes are high as the stars take to the red carpet once again for the annual ‘American Music Awards’ at the Nokia theatre in downtown L.A. The fashion this year did not disappoint and here are some of the most surprising and memorable looks from the red carpet.
In typical Rihanna style, the pop superstar dawned a daring black number when she attended the awards show on Sunday. The plunging, strapless bralet and sheer floor-length skirt showed off the Grammy award winner’s perfectly toned thighs and washboard abs. The revealing dress, which left little to the imagination and showed off the star’s numerous tattoos and was paired with a ‘doobie wrap’ hairstyle, a slick look for Barbados beauty. Rihanna also walked away with the ‘AMA Icon Award’ which was presented to her by her mother, and later performed her smash hit ‘Diamonds’. Love it or hate, the sexy star undoubtedly turned heads with this fearless style choice, although the overall look could have done without the noticeable tan lines!
Taylor Swift certainly emphasised her best assets with her style choice for the evening- her never-ending legs! The country star shone in this gold glitter mini dress, by Welsh designer Julien MacDonald. Her perfect pins allowed the blonde beauty to get away with this very mini mini, which was paired with gold Jimmy Choo strappy sandals and minimal jewellery. Her simple, tousled hair added an effortless element to the look with the sheer panel in the middle adding an extra bit of sexiness. Trying to show Harry Styles what he’s missing, Taylor? The glittering goddess also picked up an impressive four awards including the prestigious ‘Artist of the Year’, ‘Country Album of the Year’, Favourite Female Country Artist’ and ‘Pop/Rock Artist’. All of those failed relationships are clearly paying off!
Naya Rivera may have stolen the show, with the 26 year old Glee star looking flawless in her floor length black dress. The high-necked number with a flowing train also included a cut out exposing major cleavage, offering a delicate balance between sophisticated and sexy. The fiancé of Big Sean teamed this all black look with a gold cuff and rings, keeping it simple and elegant and her curled brown locks with plenty of volume and sultry eye make-up channelled a Kim Kardshian-esque look. The boobs may have had something to do with it too!
Lady Gaga was also one of the stand-outs of the award ceremony for looking so…normal. The usually overly eccentric star looked radiant in a flowing purple Versace gown, after recently becoming the face of the leading fashion house. The dress featured a bandeau top with a silver body chain, along with a cascading blonde wig. Her make-up was also very minimal but in true Gaga style, she did have a suited man escort her down the carpet while she sat delicately upon a giant white horse made up of two men in white lycra. Well she had to have something, didn’t she? She may have arrived on a high horse, but Gaga seemed delighted with her new gig with Versace, wanting to wear the exact dress and make-up from the campaign ad. Her strange entrance was followed by an even stranger performance of her song ‘Do What U Want’, where gaga and R Kelly played a game of secretary and President, with R Kelly straddling her half way through the number. What can you say, at least the meat dress was left at home!
Miley also rocked up in a demure ensemble, dressed in a tailored white suit including an open-necked blazer with no top underneath. The sexy sophistication suited the young star, who had just turned 21 the day before, and it was a welcomed departure from her recent tacky styling. However, things took a turn for the worst when the whacky singer got catty. The former Hannah Montana star performed her hit ‘Wrecking ball’ in an extremely revealing two piece embellished with cartoon kitties, all the while singing in front of a background of crying cats. Even with its amateur appearance and irrelevance to the song, it certainly gave the audience something to remember. Thankfully, the controversial singer also showed off her brown brows once again, after debuting a slightly creepy bleached eyebrow trend last week.
